Butterfly food

This afternoon, Alina was playing outside.  The following conversation occurred in Franglais:

ALINA: (pulling me by the hand)  Come see my butterflies!  (Opening her free hand) I brought them some food.

ME:  (following obligingly) And what do butterflies eat?

ALINA:  Cat food, tortillas, and (looking up) moonsauce.

Later on, I got more information about moonsauce.

ALINA:  (Jumping up and grabbing the air)  Me have the moon.  (Making motions of screwing on a lid)  Me puttin' it in one jar.  (Taking moonsauce on her finger, and holding it out for me)  Here!

ME:  (Tasting the proffered moonsauce)  It's very good!

ALINA:  You can eat it on your pasta, or on whatever you like.

Stinky, stinky

ALINA:  It stinks!

ME:  What stinks?

ALINA:  My nose.

ME:  Your nose stinks?

ALINA:  No, my nose felt something that stinks!

More Red-letter Day Randomness

Tassia is big into milestones recently.  Today it was Tooth #3 and her first haircut.  It's funny, because cutting her hair made me realize how much blonder she is than Alina.  Much, much blonder.

Since Feb 1, I have a picture of Silas picking his nose in my kitchen.

It's good to be on vacation.

I need to recharge batteries so I can take some pictures.

Tassia now actively bonks heads.  And laughs hysterically.

Red-letter Day Randomness

Today is a red-letter day. This morning, Tassia pulled herself up into a standing position for the first time. This afternoon, she crawled for the first time. I mean, real, on-all-fours, stomach-off-the-ground crawling. All that was missing was the arrival of Tooth #3. Maybe that's for tomorrow.

I'm reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. A book everyone's heard of, but I've never heard of anyone actually reading it. It has a goofy title, but I'm enjoying it. I read it when I have time: when I Tassia nurses before bedtime, and when I brush my teeth.

Some days, it seems like everything is possible. I'm a good mom. I can cook. I can clean. I can sew. I can spend quality time with my girls. Then, some days, it seems like everything's wrong: The house will never be clean. Tassia will never sleep through the night. I lose my temper. Today was mostly the former.

In 2009, I posted about 1/3 fewer blog posts than in 2008. I'm not sure that at this rate, 2010 is going to be any better.

Tassia is suddenly taking naps. She slept for almost 3 hours today.

Alina spends all day with a marker in her hand. She suddenly loves drawing. This seems to correspond with a certain phase of development where she can conceive and realize drawings that actually sort of look like something. Tonight. she wanted to write Happy Birthday, Alina. She needed a bit of help, of course, but she got it all written out!

We got pictures printed last week. It's been awhile. Let's just say we were printing pictures of Alina's first birthday.

Alina has learned a couple of verses from the Bible. Recently, I've taught her, "God is love," from I John. The other day, I said, "Alina, God is?" to which she replied, "Wonderful!". Can't argue with that!

Should I consider buying Alina a 1/10 size violin? Since the 1/8 size I have is actually still too big? Or, to ask the same question another way, am I really serious about putting my Suzuki training to use again and teaching my own daughter?

If anyone's been waiting with bated breath for the end of the piano story...well...we don't like to talk about that too much. My initial idea that I should have someone who knows something about pianos look at a piano before I would buy it proved to be correct. Would anyone like a piano-sized paperweight?

At Grandma Tildy's

The fingerpuppets? My mom's. The exterior decoration? Alina's. The liturgical-green curtains? Mine.

Hungry Hippos

Overheard tonight at dinner:

ME: Tassia, you were a hungry little hippo tonight! (Making reference, of course, to the game that happily occupied many hours of my childhood.)

ALINA: This hungry hippo went to market. This hungry hippo stayed home and made himself a tartine. This hungry hippo had roast beef. This hungry hippo had none. And this hungry hippo cried wee, wee, wee all the way home!

A White Epiphany

Greetings from snowy Melle. It's snowed twice this year. Given that it also snowed last year, this may announce the beginning of a new ice age. In any case, for a variety of factors, things have been...well...not quite shut down, but very calm here. Just as an example, I was supposed to teach 10 individual lessons today. I only had 4 students show up. On Monday after my lessons, we also had a little adventure involving our car, a steep hill, and ice. I'll spare you the details, but everyone is fine, including the car.

Today we made what will certainly be our last batch of Christmas cookies for the season. I'm marking the occasion by posting some slightly-belated Christmas pictures:

Alina's new apron, which she has already made good use of!

What you see here is Alina who made a "sandwich." She took a slice of foie gras (first course of Christmas lunch at the Constantini's house), stuck a goat cheese on top, and slapped another slice of foie gras on. The she proceeded to taste it. In case you were wondering, this must be some kind of major culinary faux pas. It didn't seem to taste very good, either.
