Château de Commarque

One of our favorite things we did while we were in Périgord was visiting the Château of Commarque. It's actually a ruined (and partially rebuilt) castle and surrounding little town. It's in a protected wilderness area, so you have to hike into it. The whole thing is built on the side of a hill, so there was lots of climbing involved. When we took this shot, we were already a little ways up.Here is a neighboring castle, seen from the Château of Commarque That same castle seen from the ruined banquet hall of Commarque.

Of course, the best part was the view when you actually got to the top of the tower. The only downside (no pun intended) was having to climb back down the narrow, worn-stone spiral staircase with 2 little people who you desperately did not want to see take a tumble. Alina and I went down "on our bottoms" with Tassia in the the carry-scarf. Everyone made it down fine, but my legs were sore for a week afterward.
